Parent classes

We offer several parent education classes to parents of our NICU patients:

  • Preemie Development - Early Days:
    Learn how to communicate and support your baby in the “early days” in the NICU, including how to touch, handle, calm, and read your baby’s communication cues.
    This class is facilitated by our occupational and/or physical therapists.

  • Preemie Development - Going Home:
    Promote your baby’s development post discharge. Topics: play program, correcting for prematurity, milestones, transition to home, and positioning for safe sleep & play.”
    This class is facilitated by our occupational and/or physical therapists.

  • Car Seats:
    Reviews information on what type of car seat to purchase for your baby, or how your baby can fit properly into the seat you already purchased.
    This class is facilitated by our physiotherapists.

  • Baby Airway Management:
    Learn what to do if your baby is choking or you find them not responsive (at home). A CPR-certified respiratory therapist teaches you the skills to apply until help arrives.
    This class is facilitated by our respiratory therapists.

  • Parent Snack & Chat:
    The NICU Parent Snack & Chat is a social drop-in time where NICU families and those who have moved up into Pediatrics can meet one another informally for support, food and social connection.
    These sessions are facilitated by our social worker.

Canuck Place Children’s Hospice supports newborns, children and their families through compassionate and holistic palliative and comfort care services.

Canadian Premature Babies Foundation

The Canadian Premature Babies Foundation is a parent led organization that provides education, supports, and advocacy for premature babies and their families.

Going Home

Serves children from birth to 3 years old who are at risk for or who already have a delay in development.
Programs differ regionally throughout the province.

Comprehensive medical rehabilitation programs and multi-disciplinary therapeutic services to children with a wide range of abilities and conditions.
Programs differ regionally throughout the province.

Based out of Surrey Memorial Hospital (SMH), this team provides outpatient services for infants and children needing feeding and dietary supports.

Based out of BC Women’s Hospital (BCWH), this multidisciplinary program provides comprehensive age appropriate sequential neurodevelopmental assessments to newborns meeting specific criteria.

Based out of BCCH, this is a provincial screening program that aims to identify babies who may develop motor conditions.
